Vase with Irises | Vincent van Gogh | 1890

Painted in 1890, Vincent van Gogh’s Vase with Irises explores the expressive relationship between brilliant yellow and deep blue. Curling petals and long, angular leaves create a lively rhythm above the ochre vase, while visible strokes of paint animate the background and tabletop. The closely framed arrangement gives the flowers a sculptural presence, bringing together the intensity of Van Gogh’s colour with the considered structure of a traditional still life.
