“The Way They Live” (1879) by Thomas Pollock Anshutz depicts two young boys seated on a rough wooden bench in a simple, rural setting. Their ragged clothing, bare feet, and weary expressions highlight the hardships of working-class childhood in post-Civil War America. Painted with stark realism, the scene offers an unvarnished glimpse into poverty and social struggle, contrasting sharply with the idealized portrayals of children common in 19th-century art.
