The Letters of Vincent van Gogh
Van Gogh’s letters let us encounter an artist thinking through his work in his own words. This selection, edited by Ronald de Leeuw and translated by Arnold J. Pomerans, follows his artistic development alongside the relationships, reading and daily circumstances that mattered to him. Explanatory biographical passages help connect the correspondence.
The 560-page Penguin Classics edition includes drawings that originally accompanied the letters. It offers an absorbing companion to the Van Gogh prints in our collection, revealing the attention and deliberation behind images that are often treated only as expressions of emotion. This is a selected correspondence, not the complete letters or a full-colour survey of his paintings.
