The Evening Air | Henri-Edmond Cross | 1893
In The Evening Air, painted in 1893, Henri-Edmond Cross brings figures, slender pines and distant sails into a luminous Mediterranean landscape. Small touches of yellow, violet, blue and green create a rhythmic surface in which colour carries both light and atmosphere. The gently arranged figures and open water lend the scene the measured calm of an imagined coastal idyll.
