The Blue Door at Marquayrol | Henri Martin | 20th Century

Henri Martin’s The Blue Door at Marquayrol turns an intimate courtyard into a celebration of colour and cultivated abundance. A vivid blue door and matching shutters provide a cool counterpoint to the warm stone walls, terracotta pots and flowering plants. Slender trees rise on either side of the steps, their pale blossoms catching the light against dense green foliage. Martin builds the scene from closely placed touches of paint, giving the architecture and garden a shared, shimmering texture. The result is a welcoming study of a secluded, sunlit retreat.
