Luncheon of the Boating Party | Pierre-Auguste Renoir | 1880–1881

Renoir’s Luncheon of the Boating Party brings together a lively gathering on a riverside terrace beneath a striped awning. Painted in 1880–1881, the composition interweaves conversation, glances and gestures around a table laden with glassware and fruit. Warm skin tones and bright clothing contrast with the cool foliage beyond, while Renoir’s fluid brushwork gives the crowded scene an atmosphere of ease, sociability and shifting summer light.
