Le Cap Layet | Henri-Edmond Cross | 1904
Henri-Edmond Cross’s Le Cap Layet looks down towards a Mediterranean cove through the sinuous trunks of coastal pines. A mosaic of distinct touches of blue, green, violet and warm yellow gives the landscape its radiant surface, setting cool foreground shade against the sunlit shore. Painted in 1904, the work captures the brilliant light of the French Riviera through Cross’s distinctive balance of decorative pattern, vivid colour and expansive space.
