Constable's Skies: Paintings and Sketches by John Constable
A Constable landscape is never only about the land. Clouds, moving light and the weight of approaching weather give his scenes their atmosphere. Mark Evans examines that fascination in this illustrated volume, bringing together landscape paintings and the sky studies Constable made through close, repeated observation.
Part of the V&A Artists in Focus series, the book follows the subject across his career, from well-known compositions to studies in which clouds fill the picture. References to weather diaries help explain the precision behind those apparently fleeting effects. This compact, 144-page hardback is a rewarding companion for readers who enjoy watching the sky or want to understand how weather changes the mood of a painting.
