Almond Blossom | Vincent van Gogh | 1890
In Almond Blossom, painted in 1890, Vincent van Gogh sets an intricate network of flowering branches against a luminous turquoise sky. The close viewpoint and bold arrangement give the blossom a decorative clarity, while varied strokes of paint preserve the natural irregularity of bark, buds and petals. The painting combines the freshness of early spring with the expressive drawing and carefully balanced colour that distinguish Van Gogh’s late work.
