The Bather (c. 1907) by František Kupka exemplifies the artist’s transition from representational art toward abstraction through a masterful study of light, movement, and reflection. Depicting a nude figure partially submerged in water, Kupka dissolves the boundaries between body and environment, rendering the surface of the pool as a vibrant interplay of refracted color and form. The fluid brushwork and iridescent palette of greens, blues, and golds evoke both the sensuous immediacy of the scene and the underlying rhythms of nature. This work stands as a pivotal example of Kupka’s exploration of perception and his early contribution to modernist visual language.
