A significant and rare early view of Southampton, this large circa-1800 oil on panel by John Tobias Young showcases the artist’s meticulous eye for topographical detail. Painted with the precision of a prospectus, the composition captures the landscape’s subtle contours, structures, and shoreline with remarkable clarity. The work is presented in a superb handcrafted gilt frame and remains in excellent overall condition for its age. As one of the earliest original depictions of the area, it stands as a major example of Young’s oeuvre. The panel exhibits minor movement and natural bowing consistent with early panel paintings.
