Drawing on Dante’s Inferno, William Dyce depicts the tragic embrace of Francesca and Paolo at the moment love seals their fate. Set against a calm, idealized landscape beneath a crescent moon, the figures are rendered with restrained emotion and sculptural clarity, reflecting Dyce’s early Pre-Raphaelite discipline. The closed book in Francesca’s hand alludes to the romance that sparked their forbidden passion, transforming a tender, intimate scene into a meditation on desire, guilt, and the moral consequences of love.
