Villas at Bordighera | Claude Monet | 1884

Painted during Claude Monet’s stay on the Italian Riviera in 1884, Villas at Bordighera brings together sunlit architecture, luxuriant palms and distant mountains in a richly layered Mediterranean landscape. Broken touches of blue, rose and green convey the changing light, while the tall flowering plant in the foreground lends rhythm and depth to the view. The painting reveals Monet’s fascination with the distinctive vegetation and luminous atmosphere of the Riviera.
