Edward Cucuel’s Two Ladies in a Boat (1910) presents a sheltered waterside scene framed by slender tree trunks and leafy branches. One woman sits in a small boat beneath a flower-trimmed yellow hat, while her companion, dressed in white, stands at the edge of the water. Pale fabric and warm skin tones stand out against deep greens and cool reflections. The close arrangement of the figures and the diagonal sweep of the boat give the composition an immediate, intimate character, enriched by Cucuel’s textured brushwork and luminous handling of daylight.
