In the Garden | Robert Reid | 1911
Robert Reid’s In the Garden (1911) brings the quiet pleasures of an outdoor afternoon into a delicate harmony of light and colour. A woman in a pale dress pauses over her reading beside a table laid with silver and glass, beneath the shade of garden trees. Blue and violet shadows pass across the white fabric, while touches of green and yellow suggest sunlight filtering through leaves. Reid’s softly broken brushwork links figure, table and foliage, giving the scene an atmosphere of intimacy and gentle reflection.
